What Is Prayer?

What is prayer and why is it important was a really hard question to ask at the start of my journey with God. For anyone new to faith, I don’t think prayer comes easily straight away.

If you are anything like me you probably have no idea how to pray or how to create a relationship with God either and that’s ok. As you will learn more here to help you.

This was a challenge for me in the beginning and learning how to talk to God as I didn’t know What to say? How to say it? Or What words I should use?

I don’t think that you are meant to have it all worked out straight away. Just like any relationship, it is developed over time. However, it doesn’t have to be complicated.

How do I talk to God? Well, the answer is simple. You just talk! You can talk to God at any given time and in any place. I doesn’t cost anything and its as easy as saying, Father and then beginning your conversation.

Billy Graham defines prayer as spiritual communication between man & God, a two-way relationship which man should not only talk to God but also listen to Him.

Where To Begin With Prayer?

I had no idea where to start with prayer. I didn’t know what was right or wrong in the beginning. However, If you are open to learning then prayer can become the key to our faith in God.

How do you to start a pray? How do you finish praying? This was all very alien to me and if you’re reading this you may also be experiencing the same issues or worries.

Praying is not about sounding amazing, its about being real in our relationship with God and not hiding from Him. We can be utterly vulnerable in His presence because of His unfailing love for us.

Be thankful and praise the Lord as you enter His temple.

Psalm 100:4 KJV

So why is prayer important and why do so many people turn to prayer for help in times of need.

What Is Prayer?

Prayer is very simple really. It is just talking with God whenever we want too. We don’t have to make an appointment. He is always available and it cost us nothing!

However, when we talk to Him we develop our relationship with Him and then it becomes something much more serious. Something that we can develop and cherish.

It’s an open dialogue which may seem strange to begin with. Just give it a chance you may be surprised at what you gain during this time with Him.

As you develop in your prayer time with God this feeling will change from strange and awkward to a more intimate sense of closeness.

Don’t be discouraged when you begin this journey. I wondered how I could learn to pray like other people that I listened too. Just like everything else it is a skill that needs to be developed and nurtured.

This can be off-putting to start with and I worried that I would never be able to do this. How would I ever be able to match their words and prayers?

Will God even listen to me? What if people laugh at me for praying and I get it wrong. Perhaps they will think I am stupid for the words I use or what I talk about?

All of these thoughts, however, were ridiculous at the end of the day. Why? because all God wants is to connect with us.

God doesn’t care if our words are eloquent or not. He doesn’t need us to wear our best clothes or be the perfect person. Our Abba Father just wants us to be present in the moment with Him.

What Does God Want From My Prayers?

He just wants us to spend time with Him and talk about whatever is on our mind.

This post will help you understand what prayer is and why it is important with your journey with God.

It’s at this time that we can ask for forgiveness for how we have acted or things that we have done to ourselves or others.

This is repentance and we should seek to repent for things that we have done wrong.

We can also make promises to God to try and improve in these area’s so that we don’t continue to keep falling short of the same things.

We can be honest with him in a way that we can not be with anyone else. This gives us accountability to someone other than ourselves and helps us keep on track.

We can tell him our hopes, dreams and also our biggest fears and failures. He wants the best for us always and if we follow His guidance then He will show us the best way forward.

I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers.

Isaiah 65:24 NLT

Do I Have To Be A Christian To Pray?

If you are not yet a Christian or you are unsure about faith and religion that’s ok. You don’t have to have everything figured out. Ask questions and find out more information, you can still talk to God whether it’s in prayer or not.

Also ask other people of faith for guidance or advice on the questions that you might have. They should be able to help you find or answer things that may be unclear to you.

Most people of faith should be happy to answer your questions. I had some amazing people that helped me on my journey and allowed me the freedom to question without fear or judgement.

Which is just what I needed in seeking God.

Listening For God’s Guidance

The more we pray and the more we wait on The Word for His response the more we will know what His plan for us is.

We are all created with a purpose and for some that is far easier to determine than for others. Pray helps us to gain clarity about decisions and problems that we may find ourselves in.

The Lord is close to all who call on Him, Yes, to all who call on Him in truth

Psalm 145 :18 NLT

Life is never easy and we will always have seasons in our lives where things can be great and we will prosper but also we can have seasons where we will fight great battles too.

Praying with God through all of these occasions can help us to feel more in control as we choose to give the control to God. We don’t have to know all the answers we just have to wait on Him and trust in Him wholeheartedly.

This is when we grow in our faith.

Does Prayer Change Us?

Prayer does not change God. Pray actually started with God and His story. He uses The Bible to talks to us about Himself. What we mean to Him and what he wants for us. He is always steadfast but He can change us?

When we spend time with God we can allow Him to work in our hearts and minds to become more like him.

We can reflect on our lifestyles and our habits, we can become less self-centred and more focused on others and how we can help each other.

Instead of always being self obsessed in our own needs. Prayer has the ability to change us on the inside as well as the outside.

It can help us to become better Wives, Mothers, Sisters and Friends. By choosing to think about others and praying for them and their needs. It makes us reflect on what we have to be grateful for and why?

How Does Prayer Make Use Grateful?

When we reflect on situations or events that are happening. We are able to clearly see sometimes things that we should be grateful for. It may be a loved one’s support or a friend who is always there for us. It may be a joyful moment spent with your children or just the luxury of some peace and quiet

Being thankful to God for these moments makes us appreciate the people that God places into our lives. Or the things we receive when we have prayed for them. God will show us in so many ways that he has heard or answered our prays. We only need to put our trust in Him.

Can We Have Breakthroughs With Our Prayers?

During seasons of our life we can struggle, we may or may not turn to prayer in these situations.

Prayer has the ability to bring great breakthroughs and personal development if we are willing to focus on God and listen for His Word or message.

This can be delivered in a variety of ways but if we seek His will for us in this time then we can grow greatly and learn things we never knew about ourselves. It can also help us to understand others too.

God asks us to pray sometimes for the impossible just so that he can prove that with Him the impossible to us becomes obtainable with Him.

For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Luke 1:37 KJV

Our spirituality can also be deepened through these experiences too. As this is when the Holy Spirit works in us the most strongly.
