What does self-care as a mom look like to you? Do you do any self-care? Do you think that you need self-care? Or do you think that it is just something to do now and then?
Here you will find some simple and easy ways to practice essential self-care as a mom. These ideas can be implemented straight away into your daily routine.
What Is Self-care for Moms
Self-care is not just something to do now and again. It is and should be an essential part of your day to day life. As a busy mom, it can be seen as your job to give, give and give some more but in order for us to do this effectively and to the best of your abilities you have to ensure that you are also giving to yourself.
Some of you may be great at setting aside time to practise self-care whilst others may have to schedule time into your diary.
As with a healthy diet, what you put in is who you get out. The same is true for your mental health and well being. If you take a holistic approach to your self-care and take time to nurture your mind, body, soul and spirit you are ensuring that you can take on life and whatever it throws at you.
If you live in a constant state of worry, panic, anxiety or despair you will be sucked into lives problems, testing situations or disappointments all too easily and stay in that frame of mind. Negativity limits your outlook whilst positivity can produce gratitude and abundance. It can also help you to achieve more such as tasks, goals and targets that you set for yourself.
Below you will find my 5 essential and practical tips for ensuring your self-care that will help fill up any mama’s cup to overflowing. So you will be overflowing so you will be able to take on any problem or battle.
Essential Self-care for moms Tip 1
Prayer or Meditation
As my title would suggest This mama sure does pray. I perform it daily and you can too. Prayer and or Meditation will help any Mama to enjoy some quiet time for rest, relaxation and spiritual connection.
Prayer and or meditation can help you in times of worry, stress, anxiety and unhappiness but it can also be just as good during periods of joy, love, appreciation and gratitude.
Whilst I appreciate this might not be everyone’s go-to, that’s fine as it all comes down to personal choice. However, if you had told me a few years ago that it would become mine I would not have believed.
However, having been on this long journey and learning what I have I can quite happily tell you about the positive effects of working on your mind, body, soul and spirit.
Essential Self-care for moms Tip 2
Writing down your thoughts can be very therapeutic. It can also help you to express your emotions, set goals or if like me write down what I am grateful for each day.
I will list 5 things each day what I am grateful for from my, heating, water, light, my pretty bedroom or my new kitchen.
Likewise you can list family, friends, acts of kindness you have received or receiving something that you have prayed for.
Journalling is a way of expressing your thoughts and feelings. This is a great exercise to do in the morning or the evenings. gratitude at the start of your day will set you up as a great starting point. Whilst examining your thoughts and feelings from the day in the evening is also a great way to list what you are thankful for.
Essential Self-care for moms Tip 3
Time With A Friend
Talking or getting together with your friends can really help boost your mood and is great for your self-care routine. Certain friends have a way of lifting us and empathising with you and how you feel. Likewise, you have a duty to others to be there in times of need. As women, we rise by lifting others. Pray for the women in your life, the one’s you care for the one’s that need extra support.
Nothing makes me smile more than talking with my besties. Whether it’s talking about our day good or bad, something that we saw during the day, something that made us laugh or cry and we immediately think of them.
Naturally we are social animals and we need human contact. Whether it be through social media, telephone or face to face.
Essential Self-care for moms Tip 4
Rest & Relaxation
You may well laugh at this one like I am now. However, it is a very important part of your self-care routine.
So have you ever been sick and gone to the doctor and he looks at you and says “you need complete rest” with 1, 2 or 3 children you know there is just no way that this will happen?
But really you have to start making yourself as much of a priority as you do everyone else. Getting enough sleep or having time to relax and unwind is essential to our health and well being. It is especially necessary for good mental health.
You know how you feel after a broken nights sleep. If that increases it can soon cause us to feel unhappy, cranky, sluggish and lethargic.
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.Genesis 2: 2-3 NIV
